I chose mental health because I am passionate about this topic. Many people are facing different kinds of mental health problems, most popularly depression and anxiety. Society seems to ignore signs of mental health or lack checking up on the people around you,so through this advert I will be sharing a quick story of someone who may be facing mental health issues. My aim for this advert is to spread awareness to the local community and in particular; individuals that go through mental health issues.Alternatively, the aim of this advert is to show the severity of mental health issues and what local communities, friends and family can do to support others that go through mental health issues across the UK.
I came up with my advert ideas from my summary of research. For my summary of research, I had to watch 2 different mental health adverts .Through watching the two mental health adverts , I was able to gain ideas of my own. I was inspired by the different camera angles and transitions between scene that was used in both of the mental health adverts that i watched. As I have experienced mental health issues such as depression, this influenced me to base my ideas on how I choose to direct my advert in a way that reflects my own experience of mental health issues/depression. Before continuing with my pre-production, I met with my client to discuss ideas for my advert and any action that needs to be taken as I create my pre-production tasks before I begin filming.
Also within my production plan, I made proof of my client brief. In my client brief was evidence that I have let the Waltham Forest Community Service know what my plan is and that I will be using Waltham Forest as my location for my advert. My client brief was sent to the Waltham Forest Community Service. I also created a mind map which includes all the different topics that correlate with mental health, which I based towards the ideas for my advert. The mind map helped me to lay out my ideas thoroughly, which gave me a wider range of ideas for my campaign;which will discuss self esteem or depression as a part of mental health. This was helpful because it inspired me to use my creativity for my own advert, giving me ideas from what the different advert has done performed but also helping me come up with my own ideas.
Another pre-production task that I did was another mind map for my mental health advert , however I didn’t lay it out the same as my other mind map of ideas , but instead I thoroughly explained : what my advert is about, the reason for my advert and also explaining who my target audience are. Knowing my target audience helps me when it comes to the performance of my characters and how I will direct them. My next pre-production was my script, my script consisted of the directions and some dialogue of my cast, there is not much dialogue in my advert, which consists more visual scenes; my aim for my advert is to show the main characters experience of mental health. In addition, I intend to use my main character to portray the severity/effects of mental health. Through this I intend to create a sense of sympathy from the audience towards the topic of mental health such as depression, anxiety and how far it can affect an individuals life. Afterwards, I did my shot list , I laid this out into 4 different tables with the titles shot number, scene number, a description and also, character and props, this would come into good use when I film the scenes of my advert, as it reminds me of the different camera shots that I will be using, for example my first scene would be my first shot number (1) which would be long shot, therefore in that particular scene I will be using that camera shot.
I created a storyboard, which breaks down the scenes and storyline of my advert, including images and short descriptions. This also fits the same purpose as my shot list, my storyboard will help me during my time of filming to know the times of my different scenes and what is happening within those scenes , which gives me an easier role to direct. Following on, I also did my proposal, my proposal was a short brief of my advert, I also included facts of mental health showing various reasons as to why I am interested in using this as my media campaign and also, including my cast and the location I will be using. This would give an advance look and idea to my advert for the local community as well as my clients. One of the most helpful pre-production tasks I did was my production schedule and the reason for this is because it shows when I finished my tasks which provides helpful evidence and also gives me the schedule of my filming ( target date ) helping me in the month I begin working on filming with my cast and film team.
The pre-production task that I struggled on the most was my budget, the reason for this is because of the layout of my budget and also identifying the costs and making sure it doesn’t exceed my filming budget. However, even though I struggled working on costs and making sure the costs of my props for example fits into my budget I was still able to undertake this task and create a spreadsheet showing how my costs add up for when I begin accumulating all the things I need to have for my advert. When you are filming in an area that is not yours , especially when it involves the member of the public , it is important to get permission to use the area, therefore that is what I did. I , as the team leader, gained permission to use the Waltham Forest area from local authorities on behalf of the Bolena Film Crew. The pre-production task I found most fascinating and easy to do was my talent release and contract; through this I was able to assess and identify my different actresses and put them into their roles, I was able to identify their personalities and write up about their roles and the personality that they will have to act upon. Also, I created my risk assessment which included the possible hazards and ways to prevent the hazard from happening , so that as a director I am aware of the safety of the film team and also the cast and I am assertive of the proportions of directing my advert. Finally, after following the ideas given from my first meeting with the client I then had a final discussion(meeting) with my client to let my client know what I have done to pre-plan my media campaign(advert). Having this final meeting enables me to move on to the next step of filming my advert in March.
Within my pre-production,I came up with logistical problems such as figuring out my website, I was not familiar with wix.com which was the site used to create my own website, therefore I struggled in the beginning as I did not know the different ways I could create my own layout, however having templates on the website to start me off , helped me in many ways as I was able to figure out how to use the website and finally completed my own. When I came up with my idea I was determined on that topic, however I was not sure with how I would present the importance of the topic, I changed my mind on the storyline of my advert a couple times and also the use of characters for my advert. However, from watching other adverts and gaining inspiration from them I was able to resolve these issues as doing secondary research helped me create my own storyline for my own advert.
With my ideas and the way I have done my pre-production I have enough confidence with my advert. My pre-productions were all in detail and I was able to identify the different things needed before my filming and campaigning. I was also able to meet the brief and identify who my target audience is and I am able to know the campaigning ideas that I would need to do to spread and promote my advert and the topic of my advert most significantly. My target audience are the local community , especially the part of the community going through mental illness or know anyone going through it and with the way I have planned my advert , I know that it fits in with my target audience and that they will be intrigued with my ideas.
In conclusion, I will begin to move forward and promote my campaign I will promote my advert through social media such as twitter, instagram and more. Through this I will be able to spread the word of my advert and the cause of it. My advert is based on mental health and the title of my advert is ‘ Time for a change’. I made a house style for my website which is green and an atmosphere of nature, I have chosen this house style for my website because it brings a sense of peace, as nature and peace is relatable and my aim for this advert and topic is to bring peace to those struggling with mental health.
